History of Canal Street

Canal Street was born early in New Smyrna Beach’s history. The town was established in 1768 and the Canal Street was once an actual canal where goods were delivered to the Indian River. The street became home to buildings constructed mainly during the early 1900s, and by the 1920s, the street had developed into a booming business district.

Today, Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach reflects the cultural identity of this coastal town. With charming shops, casual restaurants, art galleries, and the Museum of History, the street has the main attraction for visitors and vacationers looking to relax, have fun, experience the local cuisine, and revel in the steep history of this area.
